INCAPABLE OF MERCY:
> The Deepest Poverty in the Eyes of Jesus
There are forms of poverty that the world immediately recognizes. An empty stomach is poverty. A body without shelter is poverty. Loneliness, sickness, abandonment, displacement, and exclusion can strip human life of security and dignity. Jesus saw these forms of suffering everywhere He went, and He did not look away.
He saw the blind beside the road, the leper separated from community, the hungry multitude, the grieving widow, the despised tax collector, the condemned woman, the stranger, the sick, and the poor. Again and again, the Gospels tell us that Jesus was moved with compassion.
Yet the Gospel also reveals another kind of poverty—one far more difficult to recognize because it can hide beneath wealth, education, religion, respectability, and power.
It is the poverty of a human heart that has become incapable of mercy. A person may have an empty pocket and know that he is poor.
But a person may have a full house, a full bank account, a full library, a full sanctuary, and a full reputation—and never realize that something essential within the human heart has become empty.
This is the poverty Jesus repeatedly exposes.
