FROM URBAN RENEWAL TO COMMUNITY RENEWAL ___Sunday (08/23/2026): St. Worships & Gospel Demos with San Francisco County Neighbors
San Francisco needs a different definition of renewal.
Urban renewal historically focused heavily on land and structures.
Community renewal begins with people.
Urban renewal asks:
What should be built here?
Community renewal asks:
Who should be able to build a life here?
Urban renewal calculates property value.
Community renewal recognizes human value.
Urban renewal changes buildings.
Community renewal strengthens relationships.
Urban renewal can produce impressive photographs.
Community renewal is measured by whether ordinary people can still call the neighborhood home.
This leads to a simple principle:
Repair the neighborhood without removing the neighbor.
Reinvestment is necessary.
Neglected neighborhoods deserve investment.
They deserve parks, transportation, schools, housing, businesses, trees, healthcare, safety, infrastructure, and clean environments.
But investment should not function like a delayed eviction notice.
A community should not endure decades of neglect only to discover that once prosperity finally arrives, the people who endured the neglect are no longer wealthy enough to remain.
That is not healing.
It is a second displacement.
