THE SYSTEM SURVIVED. DID THE NEIGHBOR?
Institutions, Human Dignity, and the Moral Test of Civilization ___Sunday (09/13/2026): St. Worships & Gospel Demos with San Francisco County Neighbors
Civilizations are extraordinarily concerned with survival.
Governments seek continuity. Corporations protect profitability. Universities preserve reputation. Cities defend property values. Political parties seek electoral victories. Religious institutions maintain buildings, doctrines, budgets, memberships, and organizational structures.
Much of this is necessary. Institutions provide continuity across generations. Laws create order. Markets distribute goods. Governments coordinate public life. Schools preserve knowledge. Churches sustain communities of faith.
But there is a disturbing possibility hidden inside every institution:
The system can survive while the person it was created to serve disappears.
The budget may survive.
The building may survive.
The organization may survive.
The policy may survive.
The economy may survive.
The government may survive.
The church may survive.
And still we must ask:
Did the neighbor/Jesus?
That question changes the measure of civilization.
