THE NEIGHBOR IS THE FINAL MEASURE:
On Civilization, Human Dignity, Artificial Intelligence, and the Gospel of Proximity ___Sunday (10/11/2026): Street Worships & Gospel Demos with San Francisco County Neighbor
Civilization has developed extraordinary instruments
for measuring its achievements.
Governments measure economic growth.
Corporations measure productivity.
Markets measure prices.
Universities measure academic performance.
Hospitals measure medical outcomes.
Cities measure population, housing construction,
property values, and public investment.
Artificial intelligence now promises to measure and analyze
human activity at a scale previously unimaginable.
These measurements are necessary.
Without them, modern institutions could scarcely function.
Yet beneath this vast architecture of measurement remains a question that no spreadsheet, algorithm, or economic indicator
can answer by itself:
What has happened to the human being?
A nation can become wealthier
while its people become less secure.
A city can become more valuable
while its residents become less able to remain.
A corporation can become more productive
while its workers become more disposable.
A machine can become more intelligent
while human beings lose meaningful control over
the decisions affecting their lives.
Civilization can become greater in almost every measurable dimension while becoming smaller in its capacity for mercy.
Therefore, the final measure of progress cannot be merely
the greatness of what humanity builds.
The neighbor must become the final measure.
