WHO RECEIVED THE HARVEST—AND WHO WAS LEFT AT THE GATE?Labor, Abundance, the Neighbor, and the Biblical Measure of Economic Progress
The Bible does not condemn the harvest.
It does not condemn the field for producing abundantly.
It does not condemn skill, labor, enterprise, stewardship, or increase.
But Scripture repeatedly places a question beside abundance:
What happened to the neighbor?
Who worked the field?
Who received the wages?
Who shared in the harvest?
What was left for the poor?
Who stood outside the gate?
Who lay wounded beside the road?
These questions become especially urgent in an age of artificial intelligence, when human civilization may acquire extraordinary new powers of production.
AI may allow one worker to accomplish what once required several. Machines may produce more with fewer human hours. Businesses may operate faster. Scientific research may accelerate. Entire industries may become more efficient.
The harvest may become enormous.
But the Bible does not allow the size of the harvest
to become the final measure of the field.
Scripture asks another question:
Who received the harvest—and who was left at the gate?
