THE BELL AND THE CROSS ___SUNDAY (07/26/2026): St. Worships & Gospel Demos with San Francisco County Neighbors
A civilization reveals its values by the voices it allows to shape its days. Throughout history, the church bell has called communities to prayer, worship, repentance, celebration, and hope. It marked the passing of hours and reminded entire cities that human life is measured by something greater than commerce or ambition. Yet the bell has never been the heart of the Church. It has only been its voice.
The Cross is the heart.
The bell may summon people to Christ, but the Cross reveals who Christ is. The bell gathers a congregation; the Cross forms disciples. The bell may ring across a city, but the Cross echoes through eternity.
History teaches an important lesson. The story of the bell tells us how civilization has treated the Church. The story of the Cross tells us how faithfully the Church has followed Christ. These are not always the same story.
Civilizations may regulate bells. They may limit their hours, measure their volume, or even silence their sound. But no government can silence a Church that still carries the Cross. For the Cross does not depend upon towers of stone or bells of bronze. It is carried in lives marked by humility, truth, mercy, justice, forgiveness, and sacrificial love.
Whenever the Church begins to worry more about the loudness of its bell than the weight of its Cross, it risks exchanging its calling for its reputation. The prophets did not ask whether Israel's festivals were well attended; they asked whether justice flowed like a river. Jesus did not tell His disciples to build taller towers. He told them to take up their cross and follow Him.
Therefore, when the bell becomes quieter, let us examine the city. But when the Cross becomes lighter, let us examine the Church.
For the future of Christianity will never depend upon whether its bells are heard above the noise of the world. It will depend upon whether the world can still hear Christ in His people.
The loudest bell God ever gave humanity was never cast in bronze.
It was lifted upon a Cross.
And its sound continues to call every generation home.
