THE STREET WILL STILL EXAMINE THE SYSTEM: AI, Human Progress, and the Neighbor Who Tests the Meaning of Civilization

Human civilization has spent centuries constructing systems.
Systems of government, systems of law, systems of commerce, systems of education, systems of religion, and systems for distributing wealth, opportunity, and power.

Each generation has sought to improve upon the arrangements of the previous one. Kings gave way to constitutions. Empires yielded to republics. Industrial machinery transformed labor. Digital networks changed communication. And now artificial intelligence promises to reorganize the very processes through which human beings acquire knowledge, make decisions, and govern their collective lives.

Yet beneath all these transformations, one question remains remarkably unchanged: What becomes of the human being whom the system was supposed to serve?

The answer cannot be found in institutional achievements alone.
It must also be sought in the places where those achievements meet their consequences.

And one of those places is the street.
The street will still examine the system.
