 Tuesday (09/15/2026): St. Worships & Gospel Demos with Berkeley/Oakland Neighbors ___*When the Neighbor Becomes the Measure; Scripture, Mercy, and the Moral Examination of Every System

Every civilization measures itself.

We measure economic growth, military strength, technological advancement, institutional stability, educational achievement, property values, productivity, attendance, membership, and wealth.

The Church measures too.

We count congregations.
We count members.
We count baptisms.
We count offerings.
We count buildings.
We count attendance.
We count programs.

There is nothing inherently wrong with counting. Numbers can tell us important things. But Scripture repeatedly introduces another measurement—one that cannot be captured easily by statistics:

What happened to the neighbor?
That question follows humanity from Genesis to Revelation.

Cain asks, “Am I my brother's keeper?”
God hears the cry of enslaved Israel beneath Pharaoh's empire.
The Law commands Israel not to forget the widow, orphan, stranger, poor, and hired worker.

The prophets confront societies whose worship survives while justice collapses. Jesus places a wounded stranger beside a road and asks:

“Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?” —Luke 10:36

The question is devastatingly simple.

God does not merely measure the road.
God measures what happened to the person lying beside it.
